DALLAS/FT WORTH - With their eye for design and big hearts for worthy causes, Dallas architects, engineers and construction companies bring their “can-do” attitude every year to the international design/build CANstruction competition. Creating sculptures out of donated canned goods, 27 teams competed this year in categories such as “Best Use of Labels” and “Best Meal” as well as “Most Cans” donated. It looks like they will have to outdo themselves this year; in 2016, the Dallas teams topped the “Top 25 Cities of Canned Food Donated” list.

Structures were available for viewing Sept. 9-23 at NorthPark Center. The public’s vote counted as well as the judges’; fans of the cans could go online to vote for a “People’s Choice” favorite. All food from CANstruction, which was created by the Society for Design Admin-istration (SDA) working in tandem with the American Institute of Architects (AIA), is donated to the North Texas Food Bank. –mjm
