AUSTIN - Austin’s chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) has elected Taryn Ritchie as its president.

Ritchie, a Ryan Companies’ pre-construction engineer, got her start in the industry 17 years ago as a mechanical contractor’s receptionist.
At one time, she explored other occupational options; however, she eventually came back to construction. “It’s a good industry,” she says.
Eager to promote women in construction, Ritchie says as NAWIC president she plans to continue to support continuing technical education programs at Austin’s Crockett and Lanier early college high schools as well as NAWIC’s work with the University of Texas and its annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. “Last year, 8,000 showed up. I took my daughter,” she says.
Ritchie also wants to enhance outreach. “So many people don’t know about NAWIC and what we do,” she says. - ke
